Hailing from The Garden State, on-the-rise ambiguous alt-rap artist Trevor Spitta kicked off the new year in style with “FLYSEXUAL,” featuring RCA Records’ signee Paco. Laced by Ethan Deetz & Liam Clements, the airy head-nodder – a fan fave – comes courtesy of Trevor’s impressive debut project, SUNSET MOSHPIT, released last October. WCS recently tracked down Iron Horse Road’s Mr. Spitta where he’d been traveling out on the road in full support of friend and fellow rapper Tommy Richman’s current ‘Coyote’ tour.

Let’s hop right into this single, “FLYSEXUAL,” featuring PACO — Tell me about this track; how did it come to fruition?

I originally made this track in New York City, and then I flew back to L.A. and pulled up to PACO’s house with the song. I had him record the verse while I just hung out there, and that’s how it came to life.

Of course “ FLYSEXUAL ” comes courtesy of your latest LP, SUNSET MOSHPIT — Conceptually, what does this title represent both to and for you?

I like to think in a world where everyone is confused. FLYSEXUAL people are in love with being themselves, and don’t need a partner to fulfill themselves. But then again, it’s not supposed to be too deep.

How then does SUNSET MOSHPIT either differ and / or compare to previous Spitta efforts?

This was my first real shot at a project where I felt I was comfortable in my own skin, and had a sound of my own. Versus experimenting and trying to find myself in where I belong. I’m still always growing but this is my first project I feel comfortable with.

As an emcee, when you sit down to pen your rhymes where do you draw inspiration from?

Just my life and experiences that I’ve been through. Rarely would I take inspiration from a source and run with it. Mostly, it comes from myself – whether that’s intentionally or subconsciously.

Tell me your whole inception into music — When did you first become interested in it? And how did it all begin for Trevor Spitta?

I grew up in a musical family. I was always interested in music, specifically rap music. My pipeline was jazz to rap, and I’ve been in love with it since I first heard it.

Now you’re from Oakland, New Jersey, correct? So growing up in “De Panne,” who all did / do you consider to be your strongest musical influences?

Being from a small town with no real big music scene like the city has, I grab influences from everywhere but it was still New York City and East Coast hip-hop. Then as I grew older, I listened to everything from all over the place.

That said, how do you describe and / or define the style of music that you create and / or perform?

SUNSET MOSHPIT! That’s all that needs to be said.

Switching gears here, what exactly do you want people to get from your music?

I want people to hear my music and feel cooler, feel flyer, and feel more confident as long as my music is playing through their headphones.

What do you feel has and will continue to be the key to your longevity?

Just being consistent, and keeping the same fire I had when I was 15. Not forgetting why I started making music, and that’s from being purely in love with it. I can’t be worried about how I’ll make it a career or make a living out of it. I started this journey because I love it!

Do you have any other outside / additional (future) aspirations, maybe even completely away from music?

Honestly, I haven’t thought much about it. This is all that has been on my mind, outside of other art forms.

To date, what has been your biggest career moment(s), at least thus far anyway?

Selling out my shows in New York and Los Angeles. Last October was definitely my biggest career moment when I think about how far I’ve come. That was always a dream of mine, and being in that moment is something I’ll never forget. It really cemented the idea in my head that this is real, and I’m doing something right.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?

My favorite part is making music with my friends. How fun it is. I don’t think I fit the part where there’s a least favorite. I’m sure that will come, but it’s all good right now. If I have to answer, my least favorite part is the mentally taxing, constantly having to promote sh*t.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Grab somebody, and build something together. Music is meant to be collaborative. You can’t do it alone. If you have a group of friends that wants to do this, great. If you’re alone, you might have to grab someone by their shirt or something. I don’t know what you have to do, but you have to collaborate. This is a group effort.

As for the immediate (future), what’s next for you, Spitta?

Next for me is my next project. I’m working on it right now. I can’t give you the name or anything, but it’s coming very soon. Real soon.
