During Sunday’s Oscars broadcast, one of the highlights was a trivia portion where actress Glenn Close put her knowledge of the music in Spike Lee’s School Daze (1988) on full display. When asked about the song “Da Butt,” she quickly identified the record itself and its performers as the go-go/funk band known as E.U. Additionally, she shouted out the lead singer and bassist, Gregory “Sugar Bear” Elliot, and even demonstrated its accompanying dance.

Given that the movie takes place in Atlanta, E.U. is from D.C., and the Oscars are the epitome of Hollywood and Los Angeles, it is proof of how far music can go and just how timeless and universal it can be.

“Da Butt” topped the Billboard R&B charts not long after its release and would later go on to be sampled in records from L.L. Cool J (“Big Ole Butt”) and Wale (“Clappers”).
