Releasing their heralded group debut, Straight out the Jungle, an eclectic fusion of Jazz, Hip Hop and House, in July 1988, the Jungle Brothers, then comprised of DJ Sammy B [née Sammy Burwell], Mike Gee and Afrika Baby Bam, ushered in a whole new musical movement, ultimately paving the way for other innovative artists such as De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest or collectively the Native Tongues family.

Last year (August 11th to be exact) marked the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop — What exactly does that mean to and for you?

I am blessed to be a part of Hip Hop from its early years, so being able to witness how far it’s gone is a great milestone.

To quote the late, great The Notorious B.I.G., “You never thought that Hip Hop would take it this far!” — Was this something that you ever could’ve imagined?

No, I could not imagine it until the Corporate world seen money (from) it.

What are some of your fondest, most stand-out moments / memories during your lengthy tenure in this thing called Hip Hop?

In 1990, Wembley Stadium in London for the International tribute to free Nelson Mandela.

That said, what are your future plans and / or goals throughout the remainder of 2024 and beyond?

To continue DJ touring and working on my 2nd release Bush Camp The Mixtape Volume 2.

Switching gears here, what exactly do you want people to get from your music?

To experience Hip Hop in its purest form.

If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?

Although I prefer festivals over venues, I am open to all venue options.

On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of Hip Hop?

Absolutely not, no substance or variety like ‘90’s Hip Hop.

What do you feel has and will continue to be the key to your longevity?

My health will enable me to continue longevity.

Do you have any other outside / additional (future) aspirations, maybe even completely away from entertainment?

Retirement.

What’s an average day like for you?

Working on my production, seeking management and enjoying life.

Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans…

On social media.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?

I love traveling and meeting people from different cultures, but the deceitfulness within the business is challenging.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

To be persistent, follow your own dreams and be yourself; it’s a hard business!

Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?

Retired, enjoying life and chillin’ with my wife.
