Rapping since the tender age of 13, native Barstow, CA, emcee-producer-singer Dirty Birdy was initially handpicked by the late Shock G a.k.a. Humpty Hump of Digital Underground fame, to hop onto the song “Fool Get A Clue,” taken from D.U.’s Future Rhythm LP.
WCS recently tracked down The Black Spooks, also comprised of Sly Boogy, DJ DMP and Booquarm, former member and Wake Up Show alum…
First things first, last year (August 11th 2023 to be exact) marked the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop — What exactly does that mean to and for you?
As someone who has been a part of, influenced by and participated in the Hip Hop culture since 8-9 yrs old, as first a listener, then dancer, then beat maker, then emcee, recording artist, and performer, the 50th anniversary was monumental, and something I regard as important to ME as anything worth celebrating that has had a more positive than negative impact on everyone of all walks of life.
To quote the late, great The Notorious B.I.G., “You never thought that Hip Hop would take it this far!” — Was this something that you ever could’ve imagined?
To be honest, I have always felt like it – Hip Hop – would be a part of American culture indefinitely, but had no idea it would influence cultures outside the US and be celebrated globally like it is today.
What are some of your fondest, most stand-out moments / memories during your lengthy tenure in this thing called Hip Hop?
Receiving positive affirmation and acknowledgment regarding my artistic contributions from some of the most successful and well known artists in the music industry that I grew up listening to.
That said, what are your future plans and / or goals throughout the remainder of 2024 and beyond?
To continue to live in my artistic truth, and render my interpretation of Hip Hop through sound and artistic expression. More music and visuals for those that enjoy my music.
Switching gears here, what exactly do you want people to get from your music?
I want them to laugh, feel the nostalgia of the golden era, or be introduced to my version of quality Hip Hop.
If you could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Marvin Gaye, ‘cause he’s my favorite artist.
If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?
Madison Square Garden. It is a monumental place where once in a lifetime events have taken place.
On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of Hip Hop?
It is what it is.
What do you feel has and will continue to be the key to your longevity?
Not having an expectation outside of giving the best version of myself artistically. Not trying to “make it.”
Do you have any other outside / additional (future) aspirations, maybe even completely away from entertainment?
Want my own cartoon, lol.
What’s an average day like for you?
You’ll find out soon on my podcast.
Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans…
I love ‘em and respect ‘em. I’m a fan myself.
What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?
Favorite part is the reaction. Least favorite is the politics.
What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Be consistent.
Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?
Surrounded by my grand babies reminiscing.
Is there anything I left out or just plain forgot to mention?
And, any “parting” words for our readers?
Love yourself, forgive yourself, speak good things and speak good things upon yourself. Life is a one way trip with no do overs. So do what you TRULY want to do; Tweet Tweet!
