Recently Long Beach, CA rapper Vince Staples dropped a new project Ramona Park Broke My Heart. Straying away from the typical promotions surrounding a release, Vince decided to accompany the project with a musical titled Ramona Park Broke My Heart The Musical. An homage of sorts to his hometown, Vince intertwined older and newer songs for this visual experience by Moment House that leaves the viewers ready for Vince’s debut on Broadway alongside Hamilton and the Phantom of the Opera.
Highlighted by the track “When Sparks Fly” below, fans of Vince Staples can get a sneak peek at what the Ramona Park musical was like visually and sonically. It seems like some music journalists haven’t been able to understand Vince Staples, but maybe that’s because people are complex and his world was very different from a lot of writers at all the uppity music magazines that have criticized his effortless monotone flow.
They will likely never understand what it means to grow up in Long Beach amidst Crip culture and the complications that go with being surrounded by gang life, shootings and rough conditions, but maybe this musical will give them a better picture of why he is the way he is.
