If one truly knows Hip Hop, and holds the treasured art form near and dear to heart, then Native Baltimore, Maryland, classically trained pianist-turned-rapstress Tiye Phoenix is no stranger.

Phoenix also is one-fourth of Polyrhythm Addicts, alongside DJ Spinna, Shabaam Sahdeeq and Mr. Complex.

First things first, last year (August 11th 2023 to be exact) marked the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop — What exactly does that mean to and for you?

It was great to see so many people throughout the Hip Hop culture celebrating the 50th anniversary; there was an undeniable excitement in the air at that time. To me, it was a reminder of how Hip Hop has survived many trials and tests, and there is so much more to come. The art-form can morph into some amazing expressions of creativity and innovation. The 50th Anniversary reminded me of how powerful Hip Hop has become, and how much potential still exists in this modern time.

To quote the late, great The Notorious B.I.G., “You never thought that Hip Hop would take it this far!” — Was this something that you ever could’ve imagined?

Absolutely! I knew Hip Hop would produce some great things, and, like I said, I knew there is so much we have yet to see.

What are some of your fondest, most stand-out moments / memories during your lengthy tenure in this thing called Hip Hop?

I’ve experienced some unforgettable moments…I’ve performed with some illustrious people; ranging from Teena Marie to Gil Scot Heron. Hip Hop has played a key role in the backdrop of my life for decades.

That said, what are your future plans and / or goals throughout the remainder of 2024 and beyond?

I am excited about what modern Hip Hop will produce with respect to higher consciousness, expanded thinking, greater responsibility, and creativity. We haven’t seen the extent to which Hip Hop can go.

Switching gears here, what exactly do you want people to get from your music?

I want people to feel inspired, creative, liberated, and to feel like their frequencies are elevating. I intend for my music to encourage people to explore higher dimensions within themselves.

If you could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Wow! There are countless artists who I appreciate living, and those who’ve transitioned…it would be great to record a song with Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye…the list goes on…

If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?

I can’t say in particular.

On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of Hip Hop?

I am enjoying watching the evolution of music; the exciting part is knowing that the growth of the art-form is inevitable.

What do you feel has and will continue to be the key to your longevity?

The key to longevity is to remain true to your expression, and to honor your calling and purpose.

Do you have any other outside / additional (future) aspirations, maybe even completely away from entertainment?

I am a school counselor, and I am a Psychology Ph.D. candidate. I’m also a Professional Astrologer.

What’s an average day like for you?

I work as a school counselor at an immersion school; half of the classes are taught in English, the other half are in Spanish.

Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans…

I often respond to all messages on social media.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?

I love to write, and I love the creation process.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

I encourage people to follow their own heart, and to be in touch with their inner truth. Always be clear about your own purpose, and your life assignment.

Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?

Producing, writing music for myself, as well as others, and teaching college classes as a professor.

Is there anything I left out or just plain forgot to mention?

Nope, you covered it all.

Any “parting” words for our readers?

Thank you for being in tune with my music, and stay tuned in. There’s so much more to come!
