Bud’da, the multi-platinum producer who revitalized the sound of west coast gangsta rap in the mid-’90s by producing the majority of Westside Connection’s double-platinum selling masterpiece Bow Down, has been producing music and writing songs that are featured in the 50 Cent crime drama Black Mafia Family on the Starz network.

Executively produced by 50 Cent, BMF is based on the true story of Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory, who made a fortune through drug trafficking and money laundering before breaking into the hip-hop world through their BMF management company.

In an exclusive conversation with Chad Kiser of West Coast Styles, Bud’da talked about working on a couple of these songs in the series saying, “I recruited J-Flex lyrics for a song called ‘Last Man Standing’ in episode seven.  J-Flex wrote lyrics and performed the song. He wrote For Dr. Dre in the ’90s with ‘Been There, Done That’ and ‘California Love’ and a bunch of other joints.  I also have a song with AZ called ‘You Suckers’ in Episode 3.”

Although Bud’da made his mark producing for the likes of Dr. DreSnoop DoggAliyahXzibitIce CubeTankOnyx, and others, this isn’t the first time he’s worked in film and television. Bud’da has scored The Proud Family animated television series for Disney Studios, the WB Network enlisted him to compose their animated series The Boom Crew, he later worked with both Spike Lee and Bill Duke on the television miniseries Miracle’s Boys, which led Spike Lee to call upon Bud’da to score his wife’s 2006 show That’s What I’m Talking About.

More recently, Bud’da was nominated for two Emmy Awards and won one for his production work on the short film Unspeakable, a :60 second PSA that features the voices of the Deaf community and their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
