TJ Tilman is not only a successful business owner he can now add author to his list of accomplishments. TJ was able to get his Child Support case dismissed after representing himself and identifying legal loopholes the state and county are using to keep some fathers in serious debt. As some may already know, keeping up with and paying monthly Child Support can be difficult especially if you have multiple children or cases. This can cause serious hardship for some and even prevent them from improving their lives to enable them to take care of their children.
As stated by TJ himself, “This is not a get out jail free card, take care of your kids.” However, the state and county have very unfair and aggressive collection methods that border illegal practices, when it comes to holding fathers accountable for Child Support debt. The interest payments alone can be identified as predatory as in some states it can be as high as 27% on missed or late payments. It might also be enlightening to state that having mothers on Child Support and working in Child Support can be seen as a conflict of interest and does not truly serve as a solution to keep families together, but rather adds to the difficulty of making sure the children are being best served by this system. There is a ton of fraud that is taking place with supposed mothers enrolling for county aid and automatically attaching child support fees to unknowing fathers. This can take place without the supposed father’s knowledge and can put the accused male in thousands of dollars of debt quickly before they know there is an issue.
All in all, the system needs a serious audit and overhaul. To equally serve both fathers and mothers looking for support from the other parent. Better controls and processing on attaching fees and cases to parents needs to be in place. And quicker adjustments and reconciliation of funds and cases need to be looked at. What TJ is doing is wonderful work, providing information and tools to those who may feel stuck or defeated with this system. He is using his own experience to shine a light on a sensitive subject that has caused a lot of pain and miscarriage of justice throughout our society and our community.
